Solid GEAR collaborates with Stem Talent Girl

At Solid GEAR we support learning, we love what we do, we love it so much that we like sharing it. In fact, we know that while we teach, even us we keep learning! As Robert Heinlein said: “When one teaches, two learn”

This was the reason why in 2014 we launched the Solid GEAR Academy, from that time, there have been 3 editions and more than 30 attendees! More information is available on our blog.

When we got to know STEM  Talent Girl we could not doubt, we had to be part of it!

What STEM TALENT GIRL is?

This is a pioneering  project in Spain which has been created thanks to the collaboration between the company ASTI, Evolución Humana museum, Telefónica Open Future, Fundación Atapuerca, Talk2Us and la Obra Social La Caixa.

The goal is to inspire, educate and empower girls and women to ensure they develop their talent and achieve brilliant professional careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). There are different programs and it is pretty amazing, there are almost 50 mentors involved, yes 50 in just one year!

How do we collaborate from Solid GEAR?

At Solid GEAR we work on the ownCloud project since 2012. ownCloud is a file sync and share solution that allows users to access company files on any device, anytime, there are more than 10 million users world wide.

Certainly, STEM Talent Girl needs to share several documents as well as media between Girls and Mentors. In order to make it as easy as possible, ensuring the security, Solid GEAR has deployed “Stem Talent Girl Cloud” based on ownCloud.

Everyone involved on the project has been granted with access to the cloud multidevice. Not only via web browser but also using mobile devices because we have also published the mobile apps.

Last Saturday, 28 of January, I had the luck of introducing  Stem Talent Girl Cloud.

And, there is still something else!

At Solid GEAR we believe that there is not any better way of learning than doing, DIY (Do It Yourself).

Following this way of thinking we have gotten ready a workshop for the  Stem Talent girls whose aim is to develop a mobile app.

How can I develop a mobile app myself?

The very first thing is to define what I want to do and where I want to start. We will start the first session talking about Methodology, focused on the “SG Method” which is based on SCRUM. Besides, we will get familiar with  App Inventor, the tool that we will use to develop.

The second session will be focused on developing our App, indeed, we will not develop it, Stem girls will be the ones who will do it. There will be couples and each ones will develop each own app. The workshop will finish with a demo and a retrospective, so we will close the whole circle.

Plan – Do – Demo – Check how to improve

The workshop will take place in March, then we will let you know what we have learnt 😉
